Let’s talk about our berries!
I love making fresh cranberry sauce and I also love experimenting with different ingredients to make it! Throughout the years, I’ve especially loved making it with my kids and we still love hearing and watching the cranberries pop as they cook. Homemade cranberry sauce is a must for our Thanksgiving feast, and this one combines fresh cranberries with fresh blackberries. Cranberries and blackberries, when eaten in moderation, are both great keto options. One cup of cranberries contains about 8 net grams of carbs and one cup of blackberries contains about 6 net grams of carbs. The flavor of the cranberries, which is a bit bitter and sour, pairs so well with the blackberries which are both tart and sweet. While the berries cook, most of the cranberries will pop and the blackberries will naturally break down. You can always use a spoon and smash them even further if you’d like.
What other ingredients go into this keto cranberry blackberry sauce?
Before adding our berries to this sauce, we start by boiling a cup of water with both brown and granulated keto sugar. I used the Swerve brand for both my sugars. Their sugars contain zero calories and zero net carbs and are impressively similar in their sweetness level to regular sugars. While lime juice alone would add a nice amount of lime flavor, the combination of the juice and zest add the most awesome lime flavor to this sauce! I added pumpkin pie spice to this sauce because I love the warm flavor it adds. Most pumpkin pie spice mixtures contain a blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. You can use a homemade mixture or your favorite brand for this sauce. Last, we add vanilla which both adds flavor to the sauce and enhances the other flavors in the sauce.
How can I serve this keto cranberry blackberry sauce?
You have some awesome options for serving this sauce! Yes, it’s the perfect addition for your Thanksgiving meal to serve with your turkey. But don’t stop there! This sauce also pairs nicely with beef, chicken, pork, and seafood mains. It can be served with anything from meatloaf to roasts or from grilled chicken to fancy seafood dishes! You can also use this sauce as a condiment for burgers, brats, keto sandwiches, and lettuce wraps. Another great option is to use this sauce in place of jam as a topping for keto biscuits, chaffles, English muffins, pancakes, and waffles. As a dessert option, this sauce makes a delicious topping for keto brownies, cakes, cheesecakes, and ice cream. For a fun appetizer, you can top a block of softened cream cheese with some of this cranberry blackberry sauce, then serve it with some cheese whisps, keto crackers, or raw vegetables.
