What is Chicken Divan?
Chicken divan sounds like an elegant recipe and the name may make you think it is a classic French dish. It is actually a recipe that was created in the early twentieth century at a restaurant named The Divan Parisien in the Chatham Hotel in New York City. How fun is that! The exact recipe is unknown; but the dish contained chicken, broccoli, and a creamy Mornay sauce. A classic Mornay sauce is a Bechamel sauce with cheese, usually Gruyere but sometimes Parmesan. Since the exact recipe isn’t known, there are many variations of this dish. I hope you’ll love this low carb chicken divan recipe as much as we do!
How can this rich and creamy sauce be low carb and keto?
The traditional sauce for this dish likely included a roux made with flour and milk, both of which are high carb. This recipe relies on other ingredients to give it a thick and delicious sauce. I’ve included keto mayonnaise, sour cream, and cream cheese in this recipe! All three are low carb. The seasonings added to these ingredients make for a delicious sauce which pairs perfectly with the chicken and broccoli. And let’s not forget the layer of cheese on top rounds off the dish!
Do you have any tips for making this recipe?
This is a quick and easy recipe, but there are a few things you can do to ensure the best results for it. First, after you cook your broccoli, make sure you drain it well. This is important to ensure your casserole doesn’t end up runny. Second, let your cream cheese soften before using. This will make it easier for you to combine it with the mayo and sour cream. It will ensure you will have a smooth and creamy mixture. Third, I calculated the nutrition for this dish using chicken breasts. You can use white or dark meat, or a combination. Just know the nutritional values will be different.
