Let’s talk about horseradish!
I used fresh horseradish root for this cocktail sauce; but you can use your favorite brand of raw horseradish if you’d prefer. If you choose to use fresh horseradish root, I have a few tips on how to work with it. When picking your horseradish root, choose one that is firm throughout and doesn’t have soft spots. You’ll want to use your horseradish root soon after buying it to keep it fresh and to help it maintain its heat level! You can use a potato peeler to peel your horseradish root. I grate my horseradish root by hand using one of the larger grate options. An important thing to know is that horseradish roots vary on their heat level. You’ll want to use your grated horseradish root and make your cocktail sauce right away. The longer the horseradish sauce sets out on its own, the hotter it tends to get!
What other ingredients go into this keto cocktail sauce?
I love the Primal Kitchen brand of ketchup. They make a regular and a spicy ketchup. For this sauce, I chose the regular as I wanted my spice to come mainly from the horseradish. You can use your favorite keto ketchup for this sauce. The keto brown sugar is what takes this sauce over the top. I’ve tried making this sauce both with and without adding the brown sugar. The brown sugar version was given 5 stars by my children and myself.😊A touch of lemon juice gives the perfect acidity to this sauce. Last, I love the addition of heat and flavor that comes by adding a little of my favorite hot sauce. Cholula is my favorite, but you can use any hot sauce you’d like.
How can I adjust the sauce ingredients for my and my family’s liking?
This is such an awesome versatile sauce, and you can easily adjust it to your taste preference. All horseradish will vary in heat level. Give your sauce a taste and add more if you want. If you taste your sauce and find it too hot, you can add some additional ketchup. If you want a tangier sauce, simply squirt in some more lemon juice. The tablespoon of keto brown sugar was perfect for us. You can always start with less and add more for your preference. And last, you can add more of your favorite hot sauce if you’d like more heat.
How can I serve this keto cocktail sauce?
When people think cocktail sauce, the first thing that usually comes to mind is serving it as a dip for chilled shrimp. Yum! But there are so many fun ways you can incorporate this delicious sauce in other ways as well. This cocktail sauce can be served with your favorite cooked shrimp or even with clams and lobster. It is the perfect complement to any type of cooked or grilled fish. You can also serve it as a dip for your favorite crab cakes or salmon cakes.
But this cocktail sauce isn’t only for your favorite seafood! Try using it as a sauce in place of ketchup for topping your favorite burger or sandwich. It can be used in place of steak sauce, added to chili, and as a fabulous topper to take your meatloaf to the next level! Add it to your chicken or tuna salad to give it an amazing kick. You can add it to some sour cream and a little heavy cream and use it as a salad dressing or as a dip for your favorite raw veggies, keto mozzarella sticks, or keto chicken nuggets. - 1 cup keto ketchup
- ¼ cup raw grated horseradish
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar substitute (Swerve)
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
