Adding cinnamon and a warm hint of chili makes this creamy keto Mexican hot chocolate extra special. Enjoy!
This creamy keto Mexican hot chocolate is rich and decadent, with just the right amount of added spice. When you want a delicious hot chocolate variation, this is an awesome choice. It’s perfect as is, but you can also top it with some keto whipped cream or an extra sprinkle of cinnamon!
Let’s talk about the base for our hot chocolate!
The base for our hot chocolate is a combination of unsweetened almond milk and heavy whipping cream. This combination gives our hot chocolate richness and creaminess while also keeping the carb count down. When buying almond milk, you’ll want to make sure you’re buying unsweetened. The kind I use contains 30 calories and just 1 net gram of carbs per cup. If you’d like, you could substitute unsweetened coconut milk in place of the almond milk. Just make sure you use the kind from a carton and not from a can. Heavy whipping cream is a great keto option for our hot chocolate. It is low in carbs and adds amazing richness to our hot chocolate!
What other ingredients go into our creamy keto Mexican hot chocolate?
To our almond milk and heavy whipping cream, we add keto granulated sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder. I used the Swerve brand for my sugar. It contains zero calories and zero net carbs and is similar in sweetness to regular sugar. We then add keto chocolate chips which adds even more chocolate flavor and richness. If you’d like, you could substitute keto milk or dark chocolate in place of the semi-sweet. For our spices, we add cinnamon and chili powder. You can taste and add even more chili powder if you’d like. I started with adding ½ teaspoon of chili powder, gave it a taste and ended up adding ¼ teaspoon more! A pinch of salt and some vanilla round out our flavors perfectly! You’ll want to remove your hot chocolate from the heat and then add the vanilla to ensure it doesn’t evaporate and lose its flavor.
How do I make homemade keto whipped cream to top my creamy keto Mexican hot chocolate?
Making your own keto whipped cream is incredibly easy to do. It’s also superior in taste and texture to anything else. I recommend you chill your bowl and beaters for 15-20 minutes before using. Then, to your chilled bowl, you’ll add 1 cup of heavy whipping cream, 2 tablespoons of keto powdered sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. You’ll then want to use an electric mixer and beat your whipped cream until stiff peaks form. This means when you remove your beaters, they form peaks which completely hold their shape. You can give your whipped cream a taste and add more powdered sugar if you’d like. For our hot chocolate, I made cinnamon keto whipped cream by adding ½ teaspoon of cinnamon to the other ingredients! It was amazing and everyone loved it!
