Our keto bangers and mash combines sausages with an awesome low carb mash and an amazing onion gravy. This dish is true comfort food!
I love taking traditional dishes and making them keto, and these keto bangers and mash came out incredibly delicious while also being low carb! Traditional bangers and mash combine mashed potatoes with an onion gravy, but ours combines mashed turnips and daikon radishes with a low carb onion gravy. This makes for a great weeknight meal, but could also be served for special occasion dinners!
Let’s talk about our sausage!
You have a variety of options for the kind of sausage you use for your bangers and mash. I used cooked sausages with no added sugar to help keep the carb count down for this dish. The carb count on sausages will vary based on how the sausage is prepared and upon any added ingredients. I recommend you check your nutrition labels when buying so you’ll know exactly what is added to your sausage and can avoid unwanted ingredients. You can used Polish sausage, bratwurst, or any beef, chicken, or pork sausage you’d like. Since my sausages were cooked, I simply sauteed them in a little avocado oil while I was finishing up with the mash and onion gravy. You can also grill your sausages if you’d prefer. The nutritional information provided is for a serving to include one sausage, but of course you can make more if you’d like.😊
How do I make the mash for these keto bangers and mash?
I love making different mashes using a variety of ingredients. I’ve used cauliflower, rutabaga, turnips, and even kohlrabi and celery root. For this mash, we combine turnips with daikon radishes. If you’d like, you can use all turnips, but it will bump up the carb count just a bit. You’ll want to boil your vegetables until they’re nice and tender. One of the most important things about our mash is that after cooking, we need to drain the vegetables well to avoid having a watery mash. I drain mine in a colander, then press out even more liquid by pressing a paper towel down onto them. After blending or mashing your vegetables, if your mash is too dry, you can add more heavy whipping cream. If it is too watery, you can heat your mash on the stove over medium heat and this will thicken them up.
Do you have any tips for making the onion gravy for this dish?
Our onion gravy is easy to make, but there are a few things you can do so yours will turn out perfectly. First, I recommend thinly slicing half your onion and dicing the other half. Then, you’ll want to saute the onions until they’re tender and starting to brown. I gave mine a stir every few minutes. If your onions start to brown too quickly, you can simply turn down the heat a little. We’re using xanthan gum to thicken our gravy. You can omit this, but your gravy will turn out thinner. After adding the broth and tamari, you’ll have the best results if you bring the gravy to a boil and cook it for about a minute longer. Onion gravy is traditional for bangers and mash, but you can make keto brown gravy if you’d prefer a gravy which doesn’t contain onions.
Here are some vegetable sides that would pair nicely with our keto bangers and mash!
Bacon and Brown Sugar Keto Green Beans
Keto Maple Dijon Roasted Brussels Sprouts
Roasted Asparagus with Asiago and Bacon
Helpful Hints:
*If you’d prefer, you can use all turnips for your mash, but it will increase the carb count a bit.
*For the mash, I used an immersion blender, but you can also use a stand blender or a food processor.
