This classic wedge salad is my all-time favorite salad! It’s amazingly delicious and served with homemade buttermilk blue cheese dressing!
This delicious comfort food classic wedge salad starts with a wedge of crisp iceberg lettuce, and then is topped with bacon, tomatoes, and blue cheese crumbles. We then top it all with an amazingly creamy homemade buttermilk blue cheese dressing. You can serve this as a meal all in itself or for an awesome side or starter salad! Enjoy!
Let’s talk about our buttermilk blue cheese dressing!
I love making homemade keto dressings, and this buttermilk blue cheese dressing is one of my favorites and one of my daughter’s favorites as well. We use heavy whipping cream instead of milk to make this dressing, which helps to keep this dressing low in its carb count. To make the buttermilk, we add white vinegar to the heavy whipping cream and allow it to set for about 5 minutes. Alternately, you could substitute fresh lemon juice in place of the white vinegar if you’d like. To this, we add keto mayonnaise, sour cream, and tamari. This helps to create an amazingly creamy and delicious base for our dressing. For the best results, I recommend starting with a wedge of blue cheese and crumbling it yourself. For seasoning, we add dried chives, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
How do I make this classic wedge salad?
This wedge salad is incredibly easy to make and is a salad I always find special and even fancy to make and serve! We start with a medium head of iceberg lettuce which we halve, then halve again and remove the core, which gives us 4 wedges of lettuce. I like to set out 4 plates and place one of the lettuce wedges on each plate. To each of our lettuce wedges, we then evenly top them with our fried and crumbled bacon, our halved cherry or grape tomatoes, and our crumbled blue cheese. You can use either regular or thick cut bacon to make this salad. To cook the bacon, you can either fry and crumble the bacon slices or you can dice the raw bacon and fry it. I love to add diced red onions to my wedge salad, but you can omit them if you’d like.
Can I serve this classic wedge salad with a different dressing?
I love blue cheese and I love blue cheese dressing! But I know some people aren’t blue cheese lovers. There are some great low carb dressing options for serving this salad if you want an alternative to blue cheese dressing. You can actually follow the exact recipe here for the buttermilk blue cheese dressing and substitute fresh grated Parmesan cheese in place of the blue cheese. Ranch dressing is also a great choice for this salad. You can use your favorite brand, but it’s amazingly easy to make homemade ranch dressing and it’s also amazingly creamy and delicious! Another great option is to use Caesar dressing and again you can easily make your own if you’d like. If you’d prefer, you can even use keto thousand island dressing or your favorite vinaigrette to top your wedge salad!
