Let’s talk about turnips!
Turnips are one of my favorite vegetables. They’re also a great keto food option. And although they aren’t the lowest carb vegetable, they’re an awesome choice when used in moderation. Turnips are a low-calorie food which contain some important nutrients. They provide us with a source of vitamin C and fiber. Turnips can have a slightly mild bitter taste, but smaller turnips tend to be less bitter. When preparing turnips, it’s good to know they have a thicker skin than potatoes. So be especially careful when cutting them! Turnips are a versatile vegetable which can be boiled, grilled, mashed, roasted, or steamed.
What other ingredients go into Darlene’s smoky turnips with bacon?
Although turnips are the key ingredient to this dish, they do need a bit of help to make this dish incredibly savory and delicious. To our turnips we add bacon and bacon grease. The bacon adds awesome flavor and texture, and the bacon grease adds just the right amount of salty richness! To give our dish the perfect level of smokiness, we add smoked paprika, which is one of my favorite spices! The last ingredient added to our turnips is pepper. If you’re a pepper lover, feel free to add even more pepper to your dish. I recommend you taste your turnips and add salt if desired.
