We absolutely love this easy keto barbecue sauce and it’s one of our go-to homemade sauces! I have a confession.😊I’ve never been a barbecue sauce lover. I love grilled meats, everything from burgers to chicken and steaks, but I’m a bit picky about my barbecue sauce, mostly because I think they’re often too sweet. But I love this keto barbecue sauce. I think it’s because it’s not too sweet but has an awesome depth of flavors. I hope you’ll love this barbecue sauce as much as we do!
Let’s talk about barbecue sauce!
There are a variety of different kinds of barbecue sauces. They vary by region and by the ingredients and herbs and spices added to them. They can also vary depending on what they’ll be served with. Some sauces are tomato based. Some are vinegar based, and others are mustard based. And others contain a combination of those ingredients. There’s even an amazingly delicious mayonnaise based barbecue sauce called Alabama white sauce. Barbecue sauces can vary in their level of sweet, tangy, smoky, and sometimes spicy flavors. You’ll also see some which have citrus elements added to them. Some sauces are also quite a bit thicker than others. One of the great things about making your own barbecue sauce is that you can adjust the ingredients and amounts of ingredients for your taste preferences!
What ingredients go into this easy keto barbecue sauce?
We start our barbecue sauce by sauteing diced onions in butter. I like to finely dice my onion, but you can use larger pieces if you want a chunkier sauce. This barbecue sauce is a tomato based sauce and we get that from using keto ketchup. I like the Primal Kitchen brand of ketchup, but you can use any keto ketchup. You can also use homemade keto ketchup for your sauce. We then add apple cider vinegar, keto brown sugar, tamari, dry mustard, liquid smoke, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. This is such an easy sauce to make. After sauteing the onions, you just add all the other ingredients and let the sauce simmer for about 20 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together and let the sauce thicken. You can give your barbecue sauce a taste and add more brown sugar or more liquid smoke if you’d like.
