You can easily adjust the heat level in this sauce to your taste preference.
Let’s talk about barbecue sauce!
There are many different varieties of barbecue sauces. They vary by region and by the ingredients and amounts of individual ingredients they contain. They also vary by the type of meat they’ll be used with. Some barbecue sauces are tomato based. Some are vinegar based, and some are mustard based. And some contain a combination of those. Barbecue sauces vary on their level of sweet, tangy, spicy, and smoky flavors. Some are more peppery than others, and some have citrus elements added to them. You’ll also find a difference in the thickness of barbecue sauces. One of the fun things about making your own barbecue sauce is you can control the flavors and you can be assured your sauce is low carb and keto. Our Alabama white sauce is a fun variation and is quite different from all others because it is white and because it is mayonnaise based!
What ingredients go into this keto Alabama white barbecue sauce?
We start with a base of mayonnaise. You can use any keto mayonnaise you’d like for this sauce. To this we add a little apple cider vinegar and Dijon mustard to create the perfect amount of acid and tang! A little horseradish and tamari bring great flavor to our sauce. To balance out our flavors, we add some keto sugar. I used the Swerve brand, but you can substitute with your favorite keto sugar. For seasoning, we add garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. I consider this a medium spicy sauce. You can easily adjust the spiciness of your sauce. You can add more cayenne or horseradish if you’d like a spicier sauce. Adding a little hot sauce will bring even more heat. If you prefer a milder sauce, you can decrease the amount of cayenne or can omit it altogether.
How can I serve this keto Alabama white barbecue sauce?
You have some great options for serving this barbecue sauce. It can be served with any kind of grilled or smoked meat including beef, pork, poultry, and seafood. You can slather some on during the last few minutes of grilling or serve this as a dipping sauce alongside your grilled meat. This sauce also pairs nicely with pulled pork or pulled chicken. You can drizzle some of this sauce over cooked vegetables to give them amazing flavor. If you’d like, you can even serve this as a dressing for salads or coleslaw. Yum!😊You can also serve this as a sauce for burgers, keto sandwiches, and lettuce wraps. Another awesome way to serve this sauce is as a dip for raw vegetables. In addition, it also pairs nicely with sausages and cheese as part of a meat and cheese tray or added to a charcuterie board.
