These keto sloppy joes have an awesome balance of sweet, savory, and tangy flavors! This is a quick, easy, and delicious dish to make and it’s also low carb. Following a keto plan doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite meals and these sloppy joes are a great example of that. Enjoy!
Let’s talk about some of the main ingredients in our keto sloppy joes!
The classic sloppy joe is made with ground beef so that’s what we are using for this dish. I used 93% lean ground beef for my sloppy joes. I prefer using a leaner ground beef for this dish, but you can use whatever kind of ground beef you’d like. Just make sure you drain the grease from the ground beef before adding the sauce ingredients. To our beef, we add diced onions, red peppers, salt, and pepper. If you’d like, you could use green peppers or a combination of red and green peppers. A couple cloves of garlic give our sloppy joes amazing flavor. If you want a stronger garlic flavor, you can add more to yours.
How do you make the sauce delicious and keep it low carb?
The sauce for these sloppy joes is amazingly delicious. If you don’t tell them, no one will ever guess it is also low carb. One of the things we do to keep our sauce low carb is to combine water, keto ketchup, and tomato paste as the base of our sauce. For our sugar, we are using keto brown sugar. I used the Swerve brand for mine. It contains zero calories and zero net carbs. It’s also delicious! The addition of tamari and yellow mustard give our sauce amazing flavor while keeping the carb count down. If you’d like, you can use Dijon mustard or even spicy brown mustard for your sauce. Since we season our ground beef, we don’t add salt or pepper to our sauce. But you can give your sloppy joes a taste and add more if you’d like.
How can I serve these keto sloppy joes?
You have numerous low carb options for serving your sloppy joes! This mixture is amazing served in a bowl just as it is! You can serve this as a sandwich using your favorite keto bread, biscuits, English muffins, or chaffles. Another fun option is to serve this mixture as a dip with some raw vegetables. You can also serve it with some keto crackers or chips or with pork rinds. You can serve your sloppy joes in a lettuce wrap as well. Another option is to serve this atop some mashed cauliflower or mashed turnips. One of my favorite ways to serve this mixture is as a salad. I top some chopped lettuce with this sloppy joe mixture, then top it with some shredded cheese and homemade ranch dressing! Yum!
