This dish comes together quickly so it’s perfect for everyday meals. It’s also incredibly delicious and would make a special addition to holiday and special occasion meals!
Let’s talk about cabbage!
Cabbage is often an underrated and overlooked food, but it’s so delicious and is an awesome keto food choice. One cup of chopped green cabbage contains about 3 net grams of carbs. For comparison, one cup of red cabbage comes in at approximately 5 net grams. Cabbage is also a low calorie food which provides a good source of fiber and is rich in nutrients. One of my favorite things about cabbage is how easy it is to incorporate into dishes. You can eat it raw, chopped or shredded, to make coleslaw or salads. For cooking, you can boil, braise, grill, roast, saute, or steam cabbage. You can use it to make amazing side dishes, such as the one we’re talking about today. It can also be added to any number of dishes including soups, stews, and casseroles. Of course, it’s always amazing fermented and made into sauerkraut.
Do you have any tips for making this keto southern fried cabbage?
This is an incredibly easy dish to make, but there are a few things you can do to ensure yours turns out perfectly every time. First, if you’d like, instead of frying and crumbling your bacon, you can dice your raw bacon and cook it that way. Next, you can use any color or color combination for your bell peppers. I love the color combination of red and green, so that’s what I used for mine. I like the flavor and texture that a little chicken broth brings to this dish, but you will want to cook your cabbage until most of the moisture is absorbed into the cabbage. If you’d like a crisper cabbage, you can omit the broth altogether. Last, after uncovering your skillet and adding the bacon back to the dish, you’ll want to continue cooking, uncovered, to your desired crispness level of your cabbage.
What are some ways I can serve this keto southern fried cabbage?
You have some awesome low carb options for serving this dish! You can serve this cabbage for lunch, brunch, or dinner. I like to serve this dish just as it is, but for a pretty presentation, you can top yours with some additional bacon or with some fresh parsley.
