These keto sweet and sour turnips are out of this world delicious! They combine the perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors!

I absolutely love these keto sweet and sour turnips. They’re incredibly flavorful and reminiscent to me of hot German potato salad! I love making comfort food dishes for my family and this dish is one of my new favorites! I can’t wait for you to try this dish and hope you’ll love it as much as we do!

Let’s talk about turnips!
Turnips have become one of my favorite root vegetables. While growing up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin, we had a huge garden and grew all kinds of things; but I don’t remember ever growing or eating turnips as a child. But now, I love the taste of turnips, and I love that they’re relatively low in carbs and can be used as a substitute for potatoes in all kinds of keto dishes! Taste wise, turnips have a mild earthy and peppery flavor and can be a little bitter. I’ve found that smaller turnips are less bitter than larger ones, and once cooked, much of the bitterness goes away. Turnips are a versatile vegetable and can be boiled, grilled, mashed, roasted, or steamed. We boil our turnips in chicken broth which makes them even more flavorful.

What other ingredients do you add to make these sweet and sour turnips?
We add bacon, onions, and a delicious sweet and sour sauce to our turnips. You can use regular or thick cut bacon to make this dish. After cooking your bacon, you’ll want to make sure you don’t drain the grease. It helps to make this sauce incredibly flavorful. For our sauce, we combine keto brown sugar, red wine vinegar, tamari, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. I love the richness and the deep golden color the brown sugar brings to this dish. I used red wine vinegar for this sauce, but you could use apple cider vinegar if you’d like. You’ll want to let the sauce simmer for a couple of minutes before adding the turnips back to the skillet. You can then simply toss in the turnips so they get completely coated in the sauce. I recommend you give your turnips a try and add more salt to taste.

What are some ways I can serve these sweet and sour turnips?
You have some great low carb options for serving this dish. It’s perfect just as is, but for a pretty presentation, you could top your turnips with some fresh chopped parsley or with some fresh chopped chives. This is a perfect side for all kinds of meats including beef, chicken, pork, and seafood. You can serve these turnips with grilled meats and with all kinds of keto casseroles. They also pair perfectly with everyday mains such as burgers, meatloaf, pulled chicken, or pulled pork, just to name a few. You can also serve these turnips alongside roasts, steaks, and seafood mains. They’d also make a perfect addition to your Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas prime rib, or Easter ham! You’re sure to get rave reviews every time you serve these delicous turnips and they’re a perfect dish to bring to potlucks!
