Low carb cheesy turnips are amazingly creamy and delicious! They’re the perfect side for everyday and special occasion meals!
When you want a side that just might steal the show, these low carb cheesy turnips are a perfect choice. You don’t have to compromise on flavor or creamy texture when following a low carb plan, and these turnips are a great example of that. I hope you’ll enjoy this dish as much as we do!
Let’s talk about our turnips!
Turnips are an awesome keto food choice! They aren’t the lowest carb vegetable, but when eaten in moderation, they can easily be incorporated into a low carb and keto plan. If you’ve never tried turnips, I’d encourage you to give them a try. They have become one of my favorite foods as they can be cooked in a variety of ways and can be made into some awesome dishes. You can boil, grill, mash, roast, or steam turnips. They make a great low carb substitution in dishes calling for potatoes. Taste wise, turnips have a nice earthy flavor. And while raw turnips can be slightly bitter, once cooked they lose much of this bitterness and can even take on a slightly nutty and sweet taste. For this dish, we’re first boiling our turnips, then baking them in an amazing cheese sauce.
How do I make the cheese sauce for these low carb cheesy turnips?
The cheese sauce for this dish is incredibly rich, creamy, and cheesy. It’s also incredibly easy to make. I start making my cheese sauce when my turnips are almost done cooking. For our creamy base, we combine heavy whipping cream and cream cheese. I like to start with softened and cubed cream cheese. For our seasonings, we add garlic and onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. You’ll want to heat this mixture over medium heat and stir or whisk occasionally until the cream cheese is completely melted. Now for the cheese! I used colby jack cheese, but any good melting cheese can be substituted as well. I highly recommend buying a block of cheese and grating it yourself as it melts so much better. After you add the cheese, you’ll stir or whisk until the cheese is completely melted and your sauce is smooth.
What are some ways I can serve these low carb cheesy turnips?
You have some awesome low carb options for serving these turnips. For a pretty presentation, I like to sprinkle some paprika and fresh chopped parsley over the turnips before baking. These turnips are easy enough to make for everyday meals, yet elegant enough to serve for holiday and special occasion meals. For everyday meals, you can serve this dish with burgers, brats, meatloaf, keto sandwiches, pulled chicken, pulled pork, or with keto casseroles. It pairs nicely with any kind of meat, including beef, chicken, pork, and seafood mains. For holiday and special occasion meals, these turnips can be served with turkey, ham, roasts, and seafood mains just to name a few. They’re an awesome choice for a side dish for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter dinner and would be a nice addition to any brunch menu!
