When you want true comfort food, these low carb stewed turnips will always satisfy! These turnips are amazingly creamy and amazingly delicious!
I was so impressed with how these low carb stewed turnips turned out! My mom used to make potatoes that were similar to stewed potatoes, and I knew I wanted to make a low carb version! The silly part is that when I asked her how she made the potatoes, she couldn’t remember which exact dish I was talking about. But, when I tasted these turnips, they took me back to her dish, true comfort food, but made low carb!
Let’s talk about turnips!
Turnips are one of my favorite vegetables. They’re also an awesome keto food choice. While they aren’t the lowest carb vegetable, when eaten in moderation, they’re a great addition to a keto plan. Turnips are a low-calorie food which provide us with a source of vitamin C and fiber. Taste wise, turnips have a nice earthy and sometimes slightly bitter taste. Smaller turnips tend to be less bitter. Once cooked, they lose a lot of their bitterness, and can even take on a slightly nutty and sweet taste. Turnips are a wonderfully versatile vegetable. They can be boiled, grilled, mashed, roasted, or steamed. They’re a great stand alone vegetable side dish option. But you can also add them to soups, stews, and casseroles.
How do I make these low carb stewed turnips?
This is an incredibly easy dish to make, but I do have a few tips for you for making these turnips. First, you’ll want to peel and chop your turnips. I roughly chopped mine, and they don’t have to be the same size as many pieces will break down as they cook. Next you’ll want to cover your turnips with cold water until it just covers the turnips as we won’t be draining any liquid, but rather will let everything combine and thicken. You’ll then simply add the butter, bacon grease, garlic and onion powder, salt and pepper. Bring everything to a boil over high heat, then lower your heat to a gentle boil. For my stove, this was accomplished by turning the heat to medium high. You’ll then want to cook your turnips, stirring occasionally until they break down, thicken, and are at your desired consistency.
What are some dishes I can serve these low carb stewed turnips with?
You have some great options for serving these stewed turnips. They’re a great choice for brunch, lunch, or dinner meals. They pair well with any kind of meat including grilled meats. These turnips would make a nice side for everyday mains such as burgers, keto sandwiches, lettuce wraps, meatloaf, and keto casseroles. But they’re also perfect as a side for roasts, roasted chicken, and seafood mains. For holidays, these turnips would be a perfect addition to a big turkey, ham, or prime rib dinner. They’re simply delicious and a perfect comfort food that will be a welcomed addition to any meal.
