When you want a delicious and filling 30 minute meal, look no further than these awesome low carb turkey tacos!
My family loves tacos, and these low carb turkey tacos are always a big hit at my house. I made low carb cheese taco shells and served our tacos with all our favorite taco toppings. I hope you’ll enjoy these delicious tacos as much as we do!
Let’s talk about our homemade taco seasoning!
One of the things I really enjoy is making my own seasoning mixes. There are some great reasons for making your own mixes. First, they’re quick and easy to make, and you’ll save money when you make your own mixes. Next, when you make your own, you can be assured there are no added ingredients you don’t want which many pre-made mixes contain. Last, when you make your own, you can customize the ingredients and amounts of ingredients so the mix will perfectly suit your taste preferences. For our taco seasoning, we combine chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, salt, onion powder, pepper, and oregano. This mix is pretty mild, but if you’d like to add some heat to yours, you can use chipotle chili powder in place of the regular. You can also add some heat by adding cayenne powder or some red pepper flakes to your seasoning mix.
How can I serve these low carb turkey tacos?
You have some awesome options for serving these tacos! A great way to serve them is with all your favorite toppings! Some of our favorites include diced or sliced avocados, diced green or red onions, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, shredded lettuce, sliced olives, and sour cream. If you’d like, you can also top yours with some sliced jalapenos for a kick of heat. I love salads, and this turkey taco meat makes for an awesome salad served with most any kind of lettuce. Then use any of the toppings above to make it your own. Another fun idea is to combine equal parts sour cream and salsa, and then drizzle this over your salad. One of the most delicious and low carb options for serving these tacos is to make cheese taco shells while your taco meat is simmering.
How do I make cheese taco shells to serve with these low carb turkey tacos?
It’s so easy to make cheese taco shells, and they’re delicious! Here are the steps to follow:
- Pre-heat oven to 375° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Shred 1 cup of cheddar cheese and place 4 circles of cheese, ¼ cup per circle, onto the baking sheet, leaving space between circles.
- Bake shells for 7-10 minutes, or until they’re crisp and browned around the edges. Dab some of the oil off the top if you’d like. Let cool for about a minute.
- To form into shells, I set a wooden spoon horizontally across 2 mason jars. Then I place the cheese shells over the handle of the spoon, fold the cheese over to make shell shapes and leave them for about 5 minutes or until they’re set.
- You can also skip the last step and serve the shells as tostada shells.
