Sauteed mushrooms with onions are delicious served as a side dish or served as a topping for all kinds of keto dishes!

I love mushrooms, and these sauteed mushrooms with onions are incredibly flavorful. They’re also incredibly easy to make. You can serve them just as they are or top them with some fresh chopped parsley or with some fresh grated Parmesan cheese.

Let’s talk about mushrooms!
I am a big fan of mushrooms. I like them both raw and cooked. Mushrooms are low in both calories and carbs, making them an excellent keto food choice. Raw, I enjoy serving mushrooms with a dip along with other raw veggies, and I like adding them to salads. Cooked, mushrooms are an awesome ingredient to be the star in side dishes, or they can be added to casseroles, soups, and egg dishes. There are many kinds of mushrooms, but I used cremini mushrooms to make this dish. This type of mushroom brings amazing mushroom flavor and has a nice earthy flavor. You can also use white mushrooms, also known as button mushrooms, if you’d like. I sauteed my slices mushrooms in a mixture of butter and olive oil along with some diced red onions. You can use a yellow onion if you’d like.

What other ingredients go into making these sauteed mushrooms with onions?
Our mushrooms and onions sauteed in a mixture of butter and olive oil bring amazing flavor to this dish, so we add just a couple other ingredients to finish it off! I used salted butter so didn’t add any additional salt. You can give your finished dish a try and add some salt or some pepper if you’d like. We do add tamari which also has a good amount of salt in it. I added 2 teaspoons of tamari, but you can add even more. I also added 3 minced garlic cloves, but again you can add even more if you’d like. You can also substitute a little garlic powder in place of the fresh garlic. I wanted this to be a mild dish. If you want to add a little heat, you can add some red pepper flakes or a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce.

What are some ways I can serve these sauteed mushrooms with onions?
You have some great options for serving this dish. It’s perfect just as is, but you can also top your dish with some fresh chopped parsley or fresh grated Parmesan cheese. I do recommend buying a wedge of Parmesan and grating it yourself. If you’d like, you could substitute with Asiago or Pecorino Romano cheese. And if you’d like larger pieces, you can shave your cheese instead of grating it. This dish pairs nicely with all kinds of meat including beef, chicken, pork, and seafood. It’s a great choice to serve with grilled meats, roasts, and all kinds of seafood mains. You can also serve it with keto casseroles. It makes an awesome topping for keto burgers or sandwiches or as a topping for cooked vegetables. You can also add it to your favorite keto pasta. A couple of my favorites are shirataki noodles and hearts of palm pasta.
