Let’s talk about our homemade taco seasoning mix!
I enjoy making homemade seasoning mixes, and this taco seasoning is a family favorite. You have some great reasons for making homemade seasoning mixes. First, it’s quick and easy and will save you some money. Next, when you make your own mixes, you can be assured there are no unwanted ingredients in it which are often added to pre-made mixes. Some of these include artificial coloring and flavoring, corn starch, maltodextrin, and sugar. Also, when you make your own mixes, you can customize the spices and amounts of spices for your taste preferences. For our homemade mix, we combine chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, salt, onion powder, pepper, and oregano. This is a fairly mild seasoning mix. If you’d like to up the heat level, you can add some cayenne pepper or even red pepper flakes to your mix.
What other ingredients go into making this sour cream taco dip?
The creamy base for this dip is sour cream. This is also sometimes referred to this as soured cream and I think I like that term better!😊When buying sour cream, I recommend reading the nutritional labels as ingredients can very depending on the brand you choose. Some brands add corn starch, dextrose, stabilizers, and thickeners. I love Daisy sour cream and its only ingredient is cultured cream. We then add a can of drained Rotel diced tomatoes and green chilies. You can control the heat level of this dip by using mild, regular, or hot Rotel tomatoes and chilies. Our last ingredient for this dip is shredded cheese. I used medium cheddar cheese, but you can use mild or sharp cheddar if you’d like. To add some heat, you could also use pepper jack cheese. For the best results, I recommend buying a block of cheese and shredding it yourself.
What are some ways I can serve this sour cream taco dip?
You have some great low carb options for serving this dip. It’s a great dip to serve with raw vegetables. Some good low carb choices include broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cherry or grape tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, radishes, and sliced bell peppers. And although they’re a bit higher in carbs, carrots, in moderation, are a good choice. You can also serve this dip with cheese whisps, keto crackers, pork rinds, or your favorite keto chips. I often serve sliced cheese and meats, such as pepperoni and salami, as dippers as well. You can also serve this dip alongside keto fajitas and tacos or with most any keto casserole. Another fun option is to top eggs or egg casseroles with this dip. This dip also makes for an amazing condiment to serve with burgers, brats, and lettuce wraps.
