You’ll be amazed at the depth of flavor in the traditional Greek salad! This awesome salad comes together in just 20 minutes. We combine fresh vegetables with Kalamata olives and feta cheese. Then our salad gets tossed in a perfectly simple vinaigrette. Yum!
What are the key ingredients that go into this traditional Greek salad?
There are a few ingredients that are essential when making a traditional Greek salad. Our authentic Greek salad combines cucumbers, green pepper, red onion, tomatoes, Kalamata olives, and feta cheese. Isn’t that a beautiful list of ingredients! I like using English cucumbers for my Greek salad as they are longer and narrower. Their skin is also thinner, and they contain less seeds. So, there is no need to peel or to remove the seeds. You can use any kind of tomato you’d like. I prefer grape tomatoes because they are sweet and delicious, and they’re so pretty in this salad.
While Kalamata olives are traditional, you can certainly substitute your favorite black or green olive for this salad. Just make sure you buy pitted olives.😉For our traditional Greek salad, we want to use a block of feta cheese instead of crumbled feta. You can cube your feta and add it to the salad. You can also toss your salad with dressing, then top it with the block of feta and everyone can serve themselves the amount they’d like. If you do this, I’d recommend reserving a little dressing to drizzle over the block of feta.
Let’s talk about the dressing for our salad!
The dressing for this salad is simple, yet it’s amazingly delicious. We combine olive oil with red wine vinegar. I use extra virgin olive oil for my salad as I think it brings the most incredible flavor to this vinaigrette. I used dried oregano; but you can use fresh oregano as well. Just remember you need more if you’re using fresh. For this recipe, we use 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, so if you choose to use fresh, you’ll need 1 tablespoon. Our feta has an awesome salty taste, so we simply add a little salt and pepper to make this vinaigrette complete!
Do you have any tips for making this traditional Greek salad?
This is a fun and easy recipe, but I do have some suggestions for making and serving it. First, I like to slice my cucumbers and then halve each slice. If you’d like, you can simply slice yours and have larger pieces. I halve my grape tomatoes for this dish. If you use a larger tomato type, you can cut yours into whatever size wedges you’d prefer. Last, this salad is awesome when served immediately. If you want to make it ahead of time, or if you have leftover salad, it is important to know your olive oil will likely harden and solidify when refrigerated. This is normal and you simply need to set your salad out for a few minutes and the olive oil with turn back to a liquid.

Helpful Hints:
*If you’d want to take some of the bite out of your red onion, you can simply place your onion slices in some water. Let them set for 5-10 minutes, drain them well, and add to your salad.
*I recommend tasting your salad and then you can add more salt and pepper if desired.
